What Is a Speaker Horn (Horn Loudspeaker)?

A speaker horn, or "horn loudspeaker," is a special speaker design used to direct and project sound more efficiently. It is generally preferred in places where high sound output and sound transmission over large areas are required. Although "horn" can be translated into Turkish as "boynuz" or "korna," in this context the term refers to an expanding structure that facilitates the propagation of sound waves.

How a Speaker Horn Works

The horn structure takes the sound waves produced by the speaker driver through a narrow opening and projects them through a gradually expanding channel. This expansion allows sound waves to travel farther with less loss. The basic principle is as follows:

Sound energy is produced by the speaker driver.

The horn structure compresses and directs this energy toward a specific direction.

Thanks to this directionality, higher efficiency is achieved and the sound can be distributed over large areas.

Advantages of Horn Speakers

High Efficiency: Horn speakers can produce higher sound levels with the same amount of power, resulting in energy savings.

High Sound Pressure Level (SPL): They are ideal for achieving powerful sound in large venues such as stadiums and open-air spaces.

Directional Control: The shape of the horn allows sound to be directed toward a specific area, which can help reduce echoes.

Wide-Area Coverage: They are frequently used in outdoor public address systems.
